Life Changed As She Knew It From A Name On An Angel Tree with Karhma Novak

Life Changed As She Knew It From A Name On An Angel Tree with Karhma Novak

Helping others has always been an advocacy for the Novak Family, but that all changed when Karhma and her husband saw how a one mom and her daughter needed more than just donations. They knew then that God was calling them for a higher purpose.

Karhma Novak is a wife, a mother, and a teacher. She's also the executive director of the I-58 Mission, a nonprofit organization that is designed to Exalt Christ and make Him known by caring for those in crisis.

In this episode, Karhma shares with us how God called her, her family and others to a mission of helping others. Based on the verse Isaiah 58, they have heed God’s call and are accomplishing what God has called them to do - to cloth the naked, feed the hungry, and provide shelter for those in need. From a name on an Angel Tree, they have now grown to help up to 40 families a week.

In this episode:

[02:35] Karhma and her husband have always participated in the Angel Tree program. However, this time, having seen the shocking situation of a mother and daughter’s living condition pushed them do to something more.

[04:09] They started inviting friends to help. From carpentry, plumbing, and fixing the water, they got people to get involved. And from there, the support from others just grew.

[05:55] Since she was a child, she has always been connected to God. She knew that Jesus had a plan for her.

[07:48] For a time, Karhma was a teacher. She loved teaching kids, but didn’t love the pressure of tests that comes with it. She knew it wasn’t for her.

[08:37] They started a nonprofit organization in their garage, which they called Project 586. But despite having good intentions, the HOA didn’t agree.

[12:26] They got connected with a United Methodist Church who offered their two Sunday School rooms in replacement for their garage to use. And even the church they’re going to offered a room.

[14:26] Through word of mouth, their mission was spread and people came in to help.

[14:40] As they were helping and reaching a lot of people, there was also a need for food. They ended up partnering with the pastor’s wife. While they did clothes, furniture, and household goods, the pastor’s wife was doing food. In 2015, it merged into the I-58 Mission.

[15:48] For 6 months, God made miraculous things for them to keep going.

[18:37] Karhma knew this was her mission, and what she was supposed to do. She did feel fear of the unknown, but she trusted God.

[20:08] Another miracle happened when the property they’re located at got bought by another church, but with God’s intervention the church sold the property to them on a very good deal.

[23:45] With God’s help, from the $325,000 they needed to raise in a year, they were able to raise $300,000 to buy the property and was given 5 years to pay the rest.

[28:37] I-58 Mission has turned into a community that not only helps people with physical needs but also spiritual needs.

[34:11] In the future, they’re also looking into maybe providing a place for the homeless, a home.

[37:22] I-58 Mission has been a place of refuge, not just a place for food and clothes but a place where they can feel loved, esteemed, and valued.
